Rafiq has FIRE IN THE BLOOD. When the crafty Prince Akish attempts to rescue Princess Kayami Koto from a dragon-guarded and enchanted keep, it seems only sensible to bring his own dragon. There to assist is serving maid Kako– mistress of many secrets, and perhaps the only person who can free Rafiq from his bondage.
Llassar is feeling THE FIRST CHILL OF AUTUMN. Fae began to filter slowly into the land shortly after the birth of the crown princess, Dion ferch Alawn, and now there isn’t a town in Llassar that isn’t under their control.

Shards of a Broken Sword The Complete Trilogy eBook WR Gingell
If you like fairy tales or re-imaginings of fairy tales, you will enjoy W.R. Gingell's stories. And Shards of a Broken Sword shows that Gingell's writing keeps improving with each new book. Her fairy tales are new twists on old themes and yet original. My only complaint is that her works are sometimes very short, so it's nice that these three stories are in one book here. (I also own the first two novellas separately.) And it makes me appreciate her longer books even more. This trilogy has three very enjoyable stories about different characters and circumstances tied to together by the shards of a sword. There are also a couple of short stories at the end that add to some of characters' back stories. The tales are complex, original, and keep you guessing. I love all three stories, and can't really pick one over the other, although as I read each one, I keep thinking it's my favorite. Until I read the next story.
One of Gringell's strengths is her character development. Her heroines are spunky and resourceful without being snarky. So many authors think independent and strong equals mouthy and obnoxious. Not so with Gringell. Her heroes are just as complex and likeable as her heroines, and some of her secondary characters steal the stage now and then because she fills out their characters also. Gringell's world building is also complex and interesting.
Well, you can't go wrong with any of Gringell's works, although if you have to choose, start with her newer works to get her at her most nuanced writing.

Shards of a Broken Sword The Complete Trilogy eBook WR Gingell Reviews
Such a great concept to have 3 different stories that connect at the end. With the first 2 books it is not clear what one has to do with the other, but the last book ties them all together.
I really, really loved the last book. Padraig....be still my heart! He's an unforgettable character. The story's ending took me by surprise in a good way. I was happy to see joy triumph through pain. It gave the book a depth that I wasn't expecting and made me ponder on certain things (trying to avoid spoilers here).
Make sure you read the snippets at the end of the book! I especially loved the sneak peek into Carmine's and Fancy's relationship!
What a thoroughly enjoying read. I downloaded the trilogy because it was on sale, not really knowing what to expect. I was totally surprised at how quickly the characters came to life. I found myself truly liking the characters and was disappointed when book 2 started with new characters... but then I found myself them so likeable as well. The third book brought everything together. It was great how a somewhat short book can have the feel of a much longer saga. I was truly sorry when the story ended... or did it? 😉
The three stories feature different romantic entanglements, and the portrayal of the characters and their relationships is wonderfully done. The female protagonists are especially delightful in that they are intelligent, resourceful, and each have a wry sense of humor. While there are some tense and dark moments, the plots are rather light, and each ends with some happiness. The reason I hold back from giving five stars is because the stories seem short and lack the emotional depth of longer fantasy novels, thus the fairy-tale qualities of the stories overtake the fantasy elements.
There are some random errors that trip up the reader, but these are few and not too bothersome. There are some violent action scenes, but the reader is able to render the gore in as little or as much detail as he/she prefers.
If you enjoy reading fantasy tales that have unusual ties to fairy tales you will enjoy W.R. Gingell's stories. This is a collection of three books in a series. I had already read the first book but reread it to refresh the story in my mind before I read the other books in the collection. I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the story on the second reading. I throughly enjoyed all of the stories and was so gratified that the last book tied so much together so well.
Keep up the great work W. R. Gingell, looking forward to your next book.
Some of the characters are fascinating while others are shallow and predictable. The trilogy is really more one novel, but the author does his best to split the story up into three. I suspect some readers may enjoy the story more than I, but opinions almost always vary. There are some very clever segments that offer a great deal of potential had the author put more effort into developing them. The same is true of the characters although in my opinion the experience of reading the novel would benefit if there were fewer characters, better developed. All in all an interesting diversion with some entertaining and creative plot twists.
4.5
I usually love magic systems that are well-defined with clear limits. This book doesn't have that, and yet I love the way the magic system is described (convincing the wall it wasn't a wall, ha).
I usually don't care about romance at all. Yet, in each of these books, I really liked the romance. It's slow, charming, and not at all focused on what the other person looks like.
I don't usually want to read about Fae. I don't usually want to read about an MC who is old enough to have children. I usually don't like when characters die. I don't usually like when books in a series switch povs.
I guess this book isn't like other books.
Fire In The Blood, the 2nd novella here, was my favorite of the three. Dragons and a moving riddle-castle.
Masque and Spindle remain my favorite Gingell books ever, though. I love those retellings.
